November 2017

Spanish Point Golf Club are accepting new members. Spread the word of the fantastic new package available to golfers. New members can join for the very attractive price of €260. This is fantastic value for a course that has the potential to run all Winter with qualifying competitions as a result of the favorable course conditions.

SPGC Logo balls, tees, towels, divot tools, ball markers and gloves are continuing to sell well. We are very hopeful to be able to announce details of a new supplier in the very near future.

The course is going through some work which started this week. The latest phase of work that was highlighted to be completed as part of a 5-year rolling plan is underway. The work that is planned, is to address the following areas:

  1. Improve the visibility of the 1st fairway from the 1st tee.
  2. Increase the green teeing area on the 4th Hole.
  3. Remove the tiers from teeing ground on 6th Hole.
  4. Widen the walkway at the exit from the 9th green.

It is hoped that all works will be completed in the coming days.

Greens: The greens are rolling well and the feedback being received from visitors is superb. The greens have developed small patches of the anthracnose disease. This is a disease that we are susceptible to but can be managed capably by our greenkeeper Denny Gallery. The grass was growing very slowly which is the ideal conditions for this disease to thrive.

What does anthracnose look like and how does it affect the roll? It appears as irregular yellow or bronze patches of diseased turf. The greens have now been treated to stop the spread and this should run its course. The roll of the ball should still be fine and many may not notice the disease.

Tees: Work will be starting on the green 4th tee and also on the 6th tee.

The next mixed competition:

  • A Mixed competition will take place on Sunday 12th November. A draw for teams will take place on Sunday morning at 9:15.

Ladies Club:

The ladies year of golf competitions is almost at an end and the new fixtures list will be up and running in January. The AGM took place on Sunday November 5th and was well attended. Outgoing Lady Captain Fiona thanked everyone for making her year a most enjoyable and successful one, she thanked her hardworking committee, and our Sponsors who are the lifeline of our club. She expressed her thanks to President Mary O’Halloran and Captain Séamus McMahon, she also thanked Dinny and the course committee and all the bar staff for their help throughout the year.

Fiona then introduced the incoming Lady Captain Ann White and presented her with the Lady Captains pin. Ann thanked Fiona for the honour and said that she had big shoes to fill, she then announced that Karen White was the new Vice-Captain.

Sunday December 10 is our Christmas Hamper and this will be followed by presentation of prizes and a party.

Men’s Club:

The Men’s Club held their AGM on November 3rd. This brings the golfing season to a close and signals the start of another campaign. Séamus McMahon addressed the AGM by welcoming all 34 new members of the Men’s Club, complimenting the green keeping staff on the fantastic condition of the course, praising the golfers and managers that got involved with teams and reflected on some of the new competitions that were played for this year namely the Junior Golfer of the Year and the Seniors Spring League. He also thanked the Men’s Club committee, the hardworking staff members of the Club and his fellow post holders Club President Mary O’Halloran, Lady Captain Fiona O’Boyle. He also paid tribute to the late PJ Kyne who was remembered on the night.

As mentioned with every season finishing, there is another season to look forward to. This year’s Men’s Club Captain is Noel Connellan. Noel did a fantastic amount of work for SPGC this year and brings with him a great wealth of golfing experience and will lead Spanish Point Golf Club to a bright future.

Since our last communication, I am pleased to say that we have been able to have qualifying competitions. Michael Flick O’Brien was the winner of the PJ Downes Intermediate Scratch Cup. PJ Killeen was the winner of the Dan Gallery Matchplay competition after he defeated Micheál Healy in the final.

The Seniors Open Singles was very well supported throughout October. The following were winners John O’Brien, a visitor Michael Reilly from Kilkee had two wins and another visitor, Brendan Kearney, shot the lights out with a fine score of 46 points. This week’s winner was Brian O’Loughlin with 36 points.

The weekend competitions were a mix of singles and team events. The team scramble was won by Bernard Clarke, Greg Davidson, PJ Killeen and Paul Condron. The Mullinahone fourball was won by Brendan Reddan and Tom Mernagh with a great score of 81points. Greg Davidson and Niall Seery were the winners of the singles events with brilliant scores of 42 points.

There are two new competitions being held in the run up to Christmas. The Seniors Hamper league will run every Tuesday until 12th December and there is also a Men’s Club Hamper League based on results in weekend competition running until 10th December. Both competitions are based on the best four cards submitted over the 7 weeks and points are awarded for 1st to 5th places. Greg Davidson and Niall Seery are joint leaders of the Weekend Hamper League and Brendan Kearney and Brian O’Loughlin are joint leaders of the Seniors Hamper League.
